Selenium and the Moon...

We've been sending newsletters out, but several people have kindly said how interesting or entertaining they are, so we thought we would add them as a blog for those how haven't seen them. And here's newsletter number 1:

Welcome to our Thyro Eye Caps newsletter. As many of you know Huw and Saul developed Thyro Eye Caps because of the need for a combined Selenium and Vitamin D capsule with suitable doses to maintain thyroid and eye function.

Whilst this is of course a promotional email for Thyro Eye Caps and to remind people of their benefits, these newsletters will also include an interesting photo, quote or poem that is (sometimes very tenuously!) related to Thyro Eye Caps that we hope will bring a smile to your face or brighten up your day.

This is a photograph of the moon was taken by Kian Zanjani. You may wonder why have we got a photo of the moon in a newsletter about Thyro-Eye-Caps?

Apart, from being staggeringly beautiful and reminding us how much else there is out there, the element Selenium is actually named after Selene, Goddess of the moon.

The element selenium has actually got nothing to do with the moon! In fact, the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779 - 1848) who in Sweden is known as the 'Father of Swedish Chemistry’ discovered selenium, and named it off the Goddess of the Moon, because it was similar to the element tellurium. Tellurium was already named after the Earth (Tellus), so he figured an element named after the moon would complement it nicely!

Never the less, Selenium has been associated with celestial mystery (and thyroid and eye health!) ever since.
